The Dish: Diner food with a Belize flair
The Place: The Gathering Place, inside Beacon Executive Suites at 8359 Beacon Blvd., Fort Myers; 239-425-2626; www.thegatheringplacefortmyers.com
The Details: This breakfast and lunch place, staffed by the owner-chefs, serves food that makes it worth seeking out the cozy location. You can get tasty American style sandwiches, salads and breakfasts, but items reflecting the co-owner from the Central American country of Belize make for unique dining.
The chicken avocado rice bowl ($10) features mildly spiced, tender pulled chicken over subtle coconut rice. Fresh pico de gallo and shredded cheese smother the chicken, with sliced avocado crowning it. The crispy grilled flour tortillas flanking the bowl provide both handy scoops and crunchy contrast.
The chicken jalapeño mac and cheese ($11) features the pulled chicken over penne pasta drenched with the restaurant’s creamy five-cheese sauce. Drizzled spicy-sweet barbecue sauce and sliced jalapeño peppers round out the dish.
Chicken quesadillas ($11.25) come stuffed with both cheddar and muenster cheeses, roasted onions, mushrooms, bacon and pico de gallo with sides of sour cream and salsa. The unusual combination of fillings enhances the generous helping of cheeses and chicken, yet the grilled flour tortillas stay crisp.
Check the selection of homemade desserts, such as berry-topped whipped cheesecake ($6.50). ¦
